ITHACA, N.Y. –  Kent Austin, who spent five years as a successful coach in the Canadian Football League and the last two years as offensive coordinator at the University of Mississippi, has been named The Roger J. Weiss '61 Coach of Cornell Football by Andy Noel, the Meakem*Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education. Austin becomes the 26th head coach in school history and takes over for Jim Knowles '87, who resigned in January to become defensive coordinator at Duke University. Austin was formally introduced to the Cornell community this morning at a press conference in the Hall of Fame Room in Schoellkopf Memorial Hall this morning.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Jim Knowles '87 has resigned his position as The Roger J. Weiss '61 Coach of Football at Cornell and has accepted the defensive coordinator position at Duke University. A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately. Knowles took over the position at his alma mater in January 2004, becoming the 25th head football coach at Cornell. In his six years, Knowles posted a 26-34 record and a 16-26 mark in Ivy play.

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior linebacker Chris Costello has been named to the ECAC Football All-Star team after wrapping up an outstanding senior season for the Cornell football team. Costello is the first Big Red football player to be named All-ECAC since Kevin Boothe in 2005.

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior linebacker Chris Costello and wide receiver Bryan Walters were the recipients of the Pop Warner Most Valuable Player Award at the annual Cornell football banquet, held Sunday, Dec. 6. A total of 16 players received recognition for their contributions to the 2009 Big Red football team.

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Ivy League released its list of student-athletes selected for All-Ivy Academic honors in fall sports this week. The 80 men and women were starters or key reserves on an officially recognized varsity team with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages. Each institution nominated five men and women from its eligible student-athletes.

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Chris Costello led a group of six players who earned All-Ivy football honors when the teams were announced on Tuesday afternoon by the league office. Costello was a first-team selection at linebacker, while classmate Bryan Walters was a second-team pick as both a wide receiver and as a return specialist. Senior offensive linemen Quentin Bernhard and Andrew Bohl, junior punter Drew Alston and sophomore defensive back Rashad Campbell captured honorable mention accolades. The teams are voted on by the head coaches of the eight Ivy League teams.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Penn football team used a dominating defense all season to enter its season finale unbeaten in Ivy League play, and it sealed the outright 2009 title with a performance worthy of a champion, limiting Cornell to 110 yards of offense in a 34-0 shutout win on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field. Cornell closes its season with a 2-8 mark (1-6 Ivy League), while No. 24 Penn finished with an 8-2 record (7-0 Ivy League).
