11/23/2009 12:35:03 PM

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Cornell equestrian team closed its fall semester with a second-place showing at the Skidmore Show, ending in second place in the regional standings with the finish. Cornell scored 34 points to sit behind the host school, which gained 49 points.

The day started with competition in open fences where Cornell had junior co-captain Georgina Melbye for a third-place finish. Senior Nicole Finazzo and Brooke Cagwin finished second and first, respectively, in their divisions.

In intermediate fences, sophomore Katie Fink, freshman Emily Webster, junior Kelsey Craig and freshman Alexa Bruer all rode for the Big Red. Fink rode strong to a second place, while Webster rode to sixth, Craig rode to a second and Bruer won her first IHSA blue ribbon.

Novice fences were next to go and the Big Red had Sophomore Caroline Rusk and freshman Anne Elise Creamer ready to ride. Rusk rode a second place finish, while Creamer won her first IHSA blue ribbon as well.

In the afternoon, the inntermediate flat was next to go with Bruer and Fink coming back from the morning to both ride to the third place finish, while junior Mary Winans rode to the win.

The team's novice riders went like this: freshman Erika Hooker rode to a third place finish, while junior Sam Duxbury rode well to a fifth. Creamer rode really well to a second-place finish.

The team's lone walk-trot-canter rider, freshman Joelle Jach, did a great job, but heard some one else's voice and made an error in judgment before she fixed it. She had a good ride and finished second.

Walk trotters Carolyn Tsai and Joan Kim both rode very well to third place finishes, and Tsai is now qualified for the regional championships.

The Big Red goes into the break with second place in the Standings and have four people qualified for the regional championships: Zoe Samuel in intermediate flat, Morgan Broccoli in walk-trot-canter and Charmaine Tan and Carolyn Tsai in walk-trot.
