ITHACA, N.Y. -- The first part of a busy weekend for Cornell track and field took place at Barton Hall with the Kane Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Hosting 25 teams, many Big Red athletes stayed home to
compete, while a contingent also competed at the Armory in New York City on Saturday night. At home in Barton Hall, the Big Red had ten event wins and nearly thirty top-three event finishes.
The women got off to a good start on Friday night with freshman Karen Schillinger's win in the pentathlon. Setting personal bests in five events, Schillinger's total of 3,342 is #7 all-time a Cornell. On
Saturday, Cornell got event wins from a number seniors who performed well. Janice Nsor won the 60 in 7.78, co-captain Tameka Royal won the 400 in 60.21, Carissa Jones took the 500 in 1:21.71 and Mallory
Biblo won the long jump at 18-1. Sophomore Alana Levy won the 1000 with a fine run of 3:02.67 (followed closely by senior Dani Schaub in 3:02.97) and sophomore Lauren Tanz ran 9.04 in the 60 hurdles to place first, just in front of freshman Taylor Baird, who crossed in 9.15. Also placing first was freshman Emma Clarke, who won the mile in 5:15.24, leading freshman Christine Smith (5:17.06) and senior Kat Beck (5:23.77) to a 1-2-3 Cornell sweep. Other good finishes came from sophomore Mecha Santos in the 60 (3rd, 8.01), freshman Janel Parker in the 1000 (3rd, 3:06.61), sophomore Maura Carroll in the 3000 (3rd, 10:25.06), sophomore Katie Sullivan in the 5000 (2nd, 17:56.26), freshman Jessica Wilson in the long jump (2nd, 17-5 1/2) and sophomore Kim Lienhoop in the triple jump (3rd, 36-1 1/4).
The Big Red men had three IC4A qualifying performances to go along with two event wins at the Kane Invitational. Sophomore Alex Holcombe continued his break-through season with the #2 performance
in school history in the heptathlon, winning in an IC4A qualifying 4,954 points. Also performing extremely well was freshman Bob Belden, who won the shot put in 51-6 1/2 and then placed second in the weight throw with a heave of 57-5 1/2, both surpassing the IC4A standard. Junior Damian Silverstrim was third in the weight at 54-10. Other good performances came from sophomore Chris Ryan in the heptathlon (2nd, 4556 points), senior Jim Smith in the high jump (2nd, 6-4 1/4), junior Brad Herynk in the 60 (2nd, 7.13), and senior Sam Luff (2nd, 1:57.42) and freshman Chris Jakobsen (3rd, 1:58.37) in the 800.
As mentioned, Cornell also sent a contingent to the Armory in New York City on Saturday for the Virginia Duals, a unique, scored meet featuring some of the top teams in the East.
