ITHACA, N.Y. -- Following up on the success of the Cornell women's basketball Pink Zone weekend in February, members of the Cornell women's basketball team presented the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes with a check for more than $1,500 on Monday morning.

The Big Red turned in its traditional red and white for pink uniforms on Feb. 21 against Brown, helping to raise community awareness as part of a nationwide effort from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Pink Zone initiative.

On Monday, Cornell junior Lauren Benson and freshman Allison Abt, along with head coach Dayna Smith, presented Shawn Galbreath, the executive director of the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes, with a check for $1,508.80, the total amount from ticket sales and other donations from the weekend. In addition, the players gave the organization a framed and autographed pink jersey from the game against the Bears.

"We're here because of the local support we get. We really appreciate local support," Galbreath said. "We serve local people, and we're a face for those who are struggling with cancer. We're really happy when we do get local support."

"It's a great event, and we're happy we could help out with a great cause," said Smith. "It was a fun weekend for our team, and I'm glad we could help bring awareness to the community. Hopefully we can make this a yearly event and more people can take part in this next year."
