COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--Cornell wrestling's Mack Lewnes finished second at University World Team Trials last weekend. Lewnes won the mini-tournament but lost to University Nationals' champion Quinton Wright of Penn State in a best of three series. Joe Stanzione also wrestled in the tournament, but lost to two NCAA All-Americans.

Wright won University Nationals earlier this summer, which gave him the opportunity to sit out the mini-tournament. Lewnes won three matches in his mini-tournament to advance to the finals where he met Wright. In the best of three final, Lewnes won the first match, but Penn State's Wright bounced back to win the next two to win the championship of the University World Team Trials freestyle finals at 84 kg/185 lbs.

Lewnes won his first match of the weekend 6-0, 5-0 over Byron Sigmon, and followed by pinning Dustin Kilgore in his second match. Lewnes advanced to the mini tournament by defeating Luke Lofthouse by fall.

Champions in each weight class in the University World Team Trials position themselves for a trip to the University World Championships on Oct. 26-30 in Turin, Italy.

Any wrestler who finishes in the top three at next month's U.S. World Team Trials in freestyle, and is eligible for the University division, can challenge the University World Team Trials champion for the spot on the University World Team.

The Greco-Roman champions earn a trip to Italy.

Champions in each weight class in the Junior World Team Trials advance to the Junior World Championships on July 20-25 in Budapest, Hungary.
