Golf Concludes Big 5 Invitational Tied for 15th Place

PHILADELPHIA –  Cornell ended the two-day Big 5 Invitational in 15th place, dropping four places from its finish after the tournament's first day.

the Big Red golfers combined for a 44-over-par 604 in the event, tying with Ivy League foe Yale for 15th place. Cornell shot 304 on Sunday after a 300 to start the tournament Saturday.

Sophomore Carl Schimenti, who ended Saturday's opening round tied for fourth place with an even-par 70, fared worse on Sunday. He ended Sunday with a five-over-par 75 and dropped into a five-way tie for ninth place overall. Schimenti was still Cornell's top individual finisher.

Next in line for the Red was John Dean, who moved up 15 places after turning in a 72 on Sunday. Dean went from 36th place to a tie for 21st. Sophomore Craig Esposito also inched up the individual list, placing 80th out of 114 golfers after starting the day tied for 94th.

Zach Bosse's day was not nearly as good, as he started in the top 25 but plummeted Sunday. He shot a four-over-par 74 on Saturday but finished the tournament 10 strokes worse and finished tied for 85th. Rounding out the Big Red's tournament was Drew Baity, who ended two strokes better Sundaythan his did Saturday with an 81. Baity completed the tournament tied for 106th place.

Francis Marion golfer Sebastian Backlund won the tournament after shooting a four-under-par 66 Sunday to follow his round of 72 on day one. Backlund's two-under-par overall finish bested Dartmouth's Peter Williamson (139) by one and Campbell's Andrew Gai (141) by three.

Dartmouth won the Big 5 Invitational by six strokes over second-place Campbell (578) and eight strokes ahead of third-place Furman (580).

The Cornell golf team concludes its fall schedule next weekend at the Northeast Intercollegiates in Westbury, R.I. The team with play the two-day tournament on Oct. 15 and 16.
