NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore
Sam Fleck won a pair of singles matches and paired with classmate
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen in doubles to advance to the fourth and third round, respectively, on Saturday at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional.
Fleck, the 11th seed in singles, won a pair of matches against Ivy League foes to move on. He stormed back to win a narrow tilt against Harvard's Nicholas Mahlangu, 6-7, 6-0, 7-6, before dispatching of Brown's Sam Fife, 6-4, 6-2. Fleck will face top-seeded Matija Pecoctic, of Princeton, in Sunday's fourth-round match.
Fleck is the only remaining Big Red competitor in the main singles draw. Junior
Venkat Iyer and freshman Dragos DIma were eliminated in the third round, and Nguyen lost in the second round.
In doubles, Fleck and Nguyen have stayed true to their seventh seed, defeating Philip Nelson and Billy Grokenberger, 8-3, to reach the fourth round. Iyer and Dima won their Saturday match against Army's Asika Isoh and Harrison McCormick, 9-8, to earn a Sunday match against third-seeded Marc Powers and Daniel Hoffman of Yale.
