ITHACA, N.Y. - For the fourth time in the past six seasons, the Big Red field hockey squad has placed two members on the Mideast Region All-American teams, as juniors Hannah Balleza and Carolyn Horner were both second-team selections. Both earned the honor after being named first-team All-Ivy earlier this month.
Balleza ranked first on the team, second in the Ivy League and 14th nationally in points per game (2.06), while her 35 total points ranked second in a single season in Big Red history. She ended the year with a school record-tying 14 goals and seven assists, including three game winners. Her 0.82 goals per game placed 15th nationally. A two-time All-Ivy pick, Balleza already ranks in the top five all-time at Cornell in goals (third, 31) and points (fifth, 74). She was named Ivy League Player of the Week after scoring two goals with three assists in wins over Colgate and Georgetown. Balleza scored in six of the team's final seven games and had a hat trick in a win over Penn.
Horner had a breakout season, leading the Ivy League and ranking fifth nationally in save percentage while posting the league's second-best goals against average (1.88), pacing the circuit in shutouts (5) and posting the fourth-most saves (121) in her first full season as a starter. Horner was 11th in the NCAA in saves per game (7.56) and 33rd with her goals against average. She was named the Ivy League Player of the Week after earning shutout wins in goal against Yale and Siena, making a total of 10 saves in the weekend sweep. Horner had seven games in which she allowed zero or one goals.
The field hockey team finished 2012 with an 8-9 overall record under head coach Donna Hornibrook. Cornell tied for fourth in the Ancient Eight just a year after finishing seventh with just one league win.
