ARLINGTON, Va. – The men's tennis team won all six of its singles matches to defeat George Washington, 6-1, on Saturday at Army Navy Country Club. The sophomore team of
Sam Fleck and
Kyle Berman won their No. 3 doubles match, then went on to victories in their respective singles matches.
After host GW (0-1) locked down the match's first point by winning two of the three doubles matches, the Big Red took control with
a dominating performance in singles. Cornell used the same lineup as it did in last week's 4-3 victory over Penn State in the squad's season debut.
Four of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets, including Fleck's victory over 96th-ranked Nikita Fomin at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3. Junior
Venkat Iyer also topped a ranked opponent by holding off No. 76 Francisco Dias at No. 1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Sophomores
Alex Sidney (No. 3) and
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen (No. 4) had little trouble in their matches, winning 6-3, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively. Sophomore
Jason Luu also won in a tighter straight-sets victory over Ulrik Thomsen at the No. 5 spot, 7-5, 7-5. Berman improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 triumph over Viktor Svensson at No. 6.
Cornell, ranked 70th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, continues its travels next weekend with a pair of matches at the National Tennis Center in Queens. The Big Red challenges No. 48 Alabama on Friday, then takes on No. 56 St. John's on Sunday.
