ITHACA, N.Y.—Cornell wrestling's
Kyle Dake and
Nahshon Garrett have swept the EIWA post season awards it was announced on Monday. Four-time NCAA champion Dake has been named EIWA Wrestler of the Year for the third-straight season, while Garrett is Freshman of the Year. Garrett is the first Cornell wrestler to win the award since Dake is 2010. Garrett was the highest placing true freshman at the NCAA tournament.
Dake wins his third-straight EIWA Wrestler of the Year award after making history when he became the first wrestler to ever win four NCAA titles at four different weight classes. Dake is also just the third wrestler to ever win four NCAA titles. Dake was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. He was the first Cornell wrestler to earn the award since Dave Auble in 1960. He is also only the third Cornellian to earn the award with Frank Bettucci being the first in 1953. Dake earned the NCAA award for the most falls this season with 18. The Big Red senior opened his career at 141 pounds before moving up to 149, 157 and finally 165 pounds. Dake wrapped up his amazing Cornell career with a 137-4 record. Dake won his last 79 matches, a winstreak that goes back to March 6, 2011 when lost the EIWA finals at 149 pounds. Dake had perfect seasons at 157 and 165 pounds.
Dake defeated Penn State's David Taylor by a score of 5-4 in the finals to secure his fourth NCAA title. After the win, Dake was the lead story on ESPN's Sportscenter. Taylor was the returning NCAA champion at 165 pounds and won the Hodge Trophy last season which is given to the most outstanding college wrestler of the year. Dake was also named Ivy League Wrestler of the Year and first-team All-Ivy.
Garrett finished his stellar rookie campaign by placing third at the 2013 NCAA Championships. He entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed and wowed the crowd by defeating the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds along the way. In the quarterfinals, Garrett unseated the reigning 125 pound champion, Matt McDonough of Iowa, by a 4-2 decision in sudden victory. McDonough was a three-time NCAA finalist and two-time NCAA champion. In the semifinals, Garrett dropped a 10-5 decision to the eventual champion Jesse Delgado of Illinois. Garrett bounced right back from his loss by defeating No. 5 Jarrod Garnett of Virginia Tech by a 13-9 decision. In the bout for third, Garrett took on top seeded Alan Waters of Missouri. With his 6-1 win over Waters, Garrett broke the school record for wins in a season with 43. The Big Red rookie finished his season with a 43-5 mark. The former record of 42 was held by volunteer assistant coach
Mike Grey '10 and
Cam Simaz '12. Garrett was also named Ivy League Rookie of the Year and first-team All-Ivy.
The Big Red finished the NCAA tournament in fifth place with four All-Americans. This marked the ninth-straight season that Cornell had four or more All-Americans. With one of its hardest duals seasons in school history, Cornell finished with a 14-4 record.
