Tom Howley
Assistant Athletic Director for Athletes Performance/Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

Tom Howley

Tom Howley has been the strength and conditioning coach at Cornell since July 1995. In that role, he oversees the design and implementation of athletic performance programs for Cornell's 36 varsity sports. The comprehensive, year-round programs include strength and power development, mobility skill training and conditioning, and are implemented in a motivating, team-oriented environment.

Prior to his arrival at Cornell, Howley was the assistant director of strength and conditioning at East Carolina University from 1991-1995. While there, the Pirates participated in two bowl games (1992 Peach Bowl and 1995 Liberty Bowl), qualified for the NCAA baseball regional tournament (1994) and played in the NCAA basketball tournament (1993).

Howley was a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at Auburn University from 1989-91, where he earned his master's degree in exercise physiology. The Tigers, the 1989 Southeastern Conference co-champions, were the 1990 Hall of Fame Bowl and the 1991 Peach Bowl champions, as Howley also served as an assistant coach with the special teams.

A 1988 graduate of Tulane, Howley earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and was a three-year letterman and two year starting offensive lineman on the football team. The Green Wave played in the 1987 Independence Bowl his senior year. He was the recipient of the New Orleans Quarterback Club Student-Athlete Award as a senior.

Howley is an active participant in the Cornell University/Ithaca College chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He and his wife, Amanda, reside in Ithaca with their children Anna Corrine, Thomas and Jameson.

 


Jay Andress
Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

 Jay Andress is in his third year as an assistant strength and conditioning coach under the direction of Tom Howley. In his role as an assistant strength and conditioning coach he is responsible for coaching and designing programs for numerous men's and women's teams. Andress focuses on developing various aspects of training such as strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, as well as other training aspects to help his teams succeed. Andress is also responsible for various administrative duties involved with his position.

Andress arrived at Cornell from Velocity Sports Performance in Alexandria Va. At Velocity, Andress coached athletes ranging in ability level from youth to professional. Andress coached individual as well as group sessions focusing on acceleration, maximum velocity, and change of direction movement skills. In the weight room, athletes were coached on developing strength and explosive power.

Andress is a 2005 graduate of Bloomsburg University where he graduated with a degree in Exercise Science, with a concentration in Strength and Conditioning. At Bloomsburg, Andress supervised the varsity athletics weight room where he coached individual athletes of various sports in strength and conditioning.

Andress previously worked as an intern Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of North Carolina. He coached the Tar Heel football and 2006 Final Four women's basketball teams.

Andress is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, certified sport performance coach through USA Weightlifting, and a certified conditioning specialist through the National Strength Professionals Association.

Andress is currently working on a master’s in sport management at Cortland University. He, his wife Sara, and son Logan reside in Lansing.


Jeremy Golden
Interim Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

Jeremy Golden

Jeremy Golden is in his first year as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Cornell. Golden comes to Ithaca from Colgate, where he was in charge of the strength training of 14 teams.

Before Colgate, Golden served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBA Developmental League, the first strength coach in team history. During his tenure in Albuquerque, the Thunderbirds qualified for the D-League Playoffs and had a number of players receive offers to play in the NBA.

In 2007, Golden acted as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA where he was in charge of all aspects of the team’s strength and conditioning program.

Golden graduated from The University of Tulsa where he was a letter winner on the Golden Hurricane football team.

A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Golden received his master’s degree in Sports Administration from the University of New Mexico and holds certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, National Academy of Sports Medicine and USA Weightlifting.
