In a spectacular senior year he was named on almost ever All-America first team as a guard. He was rated by Coach Carl Snavely as one of the best guards he ever coached. In naming him first team All-America, the immortal Grantland Rice said: [quote]Roth combined speed, power and alertness. He was not only a star defensive guard but also just as valuable on offense. Cornell had one of the great lines of the country this fall (1938) - possibly the greatest line - and Roth was the Big Red's outstanding performer.[quote] (Teammate Bill McKeever, another Cornell Hall of Famer, was also a first team All-America selection from that great line.) Roth won the team's most valuable player award following his senior year. He had previously seen regular action as a sophomore and junior, lettering three times. He was a member of the swim team as a sophomore and was a starting lacrosse defenseman as a senior and one of the team's top players in the only season he played.
