He was a four-time All-American on the basis of his performance at the NCAA championships. He placed 29th at the NCAA cross country championships in 1992 and finished 12th in 1993. At the NCAA track championships, he placed ninth in the indoor 5,000 meters in 1992 and was fourth in the outdoor 10,000 meters in 1994. As a freshman, he was one of six U.S. representatives at the prestigious Junior World Cross Country Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, where he placed 64th out of 139 runners in the men's competition, helping the Americans to a 10th-place finish out of a field of 23 squads. He was a four-time Heps champion, winning the Heps cross country championship in 1993, leading the team to its first Heps cross country crown in 30 years. He won the outdoor Heps 5,000 in 1993 and again in '94, when he also took the 10,000-meter title in a Heps record time of 29:00.33 to earn the outstanding performer of the meet award. Clas was also a three-time All-East performer, placing fifth at the IC4A cross country championships in '93, fifth in the indoor IC4A 5,000 and sixth in the outdoor IC4A 5,000 in '93. He was captain of the cross country team and co-captain in track as a senior. The former Endicott, N.Y., native graduated from Union-Endicott High School, where he was the New York state champion in the 1600 and 3200 meters. He resides in Darien, Conn.
