Reed entered Cornell in 1896 from Silver Creek (N.Y.) High School and received his L.L.B. degree two years later. During his undergraduate days he played left guard on Glenn (Pop) Warne's football teams of 1897 and 1898. He was also a weight thrower on the track team and a member of the wrestling squad. He was head football coach for the Big Red in 1910 and '11, compiling a two-year record of 12-5-1. He was elected to Congress as a representative from New York in November 1918 and served in that capacity the mid-1950s. During his tenure in Congress, he earned a reputation of being a GOP stalwart. As a ranking Republican and former chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, he was known best as an advocate of protective tariffs to fend off competition from foreign goods. The veteran Congressman from Sheridan, N.Y. covered the districts of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Livingston counties.
