He was a prominent member of the eight-oared crew from 1959-61, with the 1960 shell winning the Eastern Sprint championship. He won a silver medal in the European Double Sculls championships in 1963. In addition, he was a bronze medal winner in the European Championships, and a member of the U.S. Olympic team at Tokyo, taking sixth in single sculls in 1964. He also won the Diamond Sculls at the Henley Royal Regatta, setting a course record that lasted until 1975. Spero won gold medal in single sculls at the Duisbug International Regatta in 1965. He was the Vesper Cup Award recipient in 1966. In 1966 he won gold medal sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Yugoslavia, and at the national championships in St. Catharines, Ont.
