Bateman’s educational leadership at Cornell spanned 42 years, with her retirement in 1962 culminating 45 years of professional service. She served as secretary-treasurer of the Eastern Association of Physical Education for College Women (EAPECW) for four years and in 1942 became its president, a role she held for three years. In addition to these responsibilities, she twice served on the nominating committee as well as the membership committee. She continued her professional service through her activities in the AAUW, Wellesley Club, Civil Defense and the Red Cross during World War II. Bateman, who received her education at Wellesley College followed by graduate work at Harvard University, was always a gracious lady, serving quietly, humbly, and with dedication. She ably represented physical education and brought to her work a conviction of service and humility. She was honored with a certificate of honorary membership in the EAPECW for her years of service to EAPECW and other professional organizations.
