A three-year competitor in cross country and track, he was the outdoor IC4A one-mile run champion in 1923, after placing third in the mile at the IC4As indoors and outdoors in 1922, and third indoors in 1923. Captain of the 1923-24 track team, Kirby was also captain of the cross country squad in 1922. He was a member of the 1924 Olympic track team, competing in the 3,000-meter team race which placed third. In 1924 he won the national AAU 880 championship.
