He was a four-year letterman and center on the basketball teams from 1945-48. He was runner-up in team scoring as a junior and senior. He was a United Press All-Upstate New York honorable mention pick in 1946 and received All-Eastern League second team honors in 1948. As a junior he was an All-League honorable mention choice. A starter in all games during his four-year career, Cornell never finished below second place in the Ivy League and never had a losing season. After graduation he signed a professional contract with the Syracuse Nationals and was named to the NBA Rookie Squad. He played professionally for three years and was a high school graduate of Bennett High School in Buffalo, N.Y.
