An outstanding left tackle, he was a three-year starter ad letterman for the Big Red football teams of 1938, 1939, and 1940. He was highly thought of because of his steady, consistent play, both offensively and defensively, and was one of very few sophomores to win a starting role in 1938. He played on teams that lost only three games; overall, Cornell had a 19-3-1 record throughout his career, with the 1939 team posting an 8-0 mark. A three-year letterman as a weightman in track, he placed second in the shot put at the outdoor Heptagonals in 1939. From 1942-46, he served as a U.S. Army ordnance officer in the European Theater and was awarded a Bronze Star. Following his war service, he joined Bethlehem Steel, and was named president of the corporation in 1974.
