He was a two-time Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association champion, capturing the EIWA 157-pound title in 1965 and the 160-pound crown in 1966. He was a two-time All-American, placing sixth at 157 pounds at the NCAA championships in both 1964 and 1965. Stephens compiled a career dual meet record of 33-6-1, going 8-2-1 in 1964, 15-2 in 1965 and 10-2 in 1966. He won 19 consecutive dual matches, winning 15 straight bouts during the 1964-65 season and four matches to start his senior campaign. He was undefeated his rookie year and won the Eastern freshman 167-pound championship. Stephens was co-captain of the team as a senior. He received the Peter J. Floros Award as the team's outstanding wrestler in 1965, and as a senior he was the recipient of the James Meldrim Award for character, sportsmanship and scholarship. Stephens is a graduate of Chenango Forks (N.Y.) High School and resides in Cary, N.C.
