He was a three-time All-American, placing 13th at the NCAA cross country championships in 1985 and finishing eighth in the 5,000 meters at the outdoor track NCAAs in both 1985 and 1986. He placed fourth at the IC4A cross country championships to earn All-East honors as a senior. In 1986, he won the indoor Heptagonal championship in the 3,000 and won the outdoor Heps 10,000 title, setting Heps and school records in that event, while also placing second in the 5,000 meters. He posted the fastest collegiate 5,000-meter time in the U.S. in 1986 by winning the Penn Relays with a t time of 13:36.9. The Cornell Sun Athlete of the Year in 1986, he was co-captain of the track team in 1985-86 and captained the cross country teams in 1984 and '85. Whitney qualified for the 1988 Olympic Trials in the 5,000 meters, just missing the finals by two seconds. He is a native of Rochester, N.Y., and a graduate of Penfield High School.
