Over his four years as a catcher on the baseball team, he compiled a career batting average of .304 on 133 hits in 437 at bats. Leach was co-captain and team MVP in 1988. He was named to the Northeast Regional Division Baseball All-America team as selected by the American Association of College Baseball Coaches, becoming Cornell's first All-American since Marlin McPhail was chosen in 1982. Leach was a unanimous All-EIBL and All-Ivy first-team selection in 1988, when he hit .390 in the league and led the team with a .394 overall average. He set the school record for most hits in a season (61, 1988). He also led the 1988 team in RBI (43) home runs (6), doubles (10) and total bases (91). Leach was invited to play in the New York State College Baseball Coaches Association All-Star game in Cooperstown in May 1988. Leach was a second-team All-Ivy and All-EIBL pick in 1986.
