As a member of the U.S. track and field team, he won the gold medal in the running high jump at the 1908 Olympic Games. He tied for second in the high jump at the 1905 IC4A championships, as Cornell won its first outdoor Intercollegiate team title. The two-year letterman set the Cornell high jump record in 1903. He won four AAU high jump championships - indoors in 1908 and 1909, and outdoors in 1908 and 1911. A consulting engineer, he helped found the Society of Industrial Engineers in 1907.
