He won varsity letters as an end on the Ivy championship football teams of 1948 and 1949 and with the 1950 squad, which placed third in the league. Over his three years as a starter, Cornell compiled an overall record of 23-4, including 8-1 marks in '48 and '49. He received United Press All-East honorable mention in 1950. He was invited to play in the 1950 Blue-Gray Game in Montgomery, Ala., but declined the invitation. A steadfast supporter of Big Red athletics, Sampson was a Cornell University Presidential Councillor and emeritus member of the Board of Trustees. He was first elected a trustee in 1976, and wa son advisory councils for the Johnson Graduate School of Management and the athletic department. He was also chair of the Cornell Medical College Board of Overseers and of the New York Hospital-Cornell Joint Board. He was a life member of the University Council, an advisory group of alumni, having served as its chairman for three years. Mr. Sampson came to Cornell as an undergraduate from Baldwin, N.Y.
