He was a starting guard on the football teams of 1939 and ’40, with the former being undefeated and the latter undefeated until the seventh game – the famous “fifth down” game at Dartmouth. In 1941 he was one of five senior Cornellians invited to play with the Eastern college all-stars against the New York Giants professional team. A starter and three-year letterman in basketball, he was named to the Eastern Intercollegiate League second team at center his senior year. Dr. Dunbar, who has a distinguished career as a neurosurgeon, was the 1965 Sports Illustrated Silver Anniversary All-America award winner. The award recognizes former athletes for athletic accomplishments and career excellence. He graduated from Roselle Park, N.J., High School.
