He won a gold medal in the discus at the 1932 Olympic Games with a throw of 162-4 7/8, which set the Olympic record.  He also competed in the discus at the 1928 Olympic Games, where he placed fifth.  Captain of the track team as a senior, he won the shot put at the indoor IC4A championships while placing second in the discus at the outdoor IC4As in 1929. He broke the meet record in winning the discus at the Penn Relays in 1929.  He was also a three-year letter winner as a tackle of the varsity football teams of 1926, 1927 and 1928.
