He was Cornell's first full-time coach of track and cross country, a position he held for 50 years until his retirement in 1949. His teams won 29 IC4A championships, 17 in cross country, 10 in outdoor track and two in indoor track. In the outdoor championships, 43 Big Red competitors won or tied 59 championships in every event except the javelin throw. Eight of the men won or tied for 11 one-mile titles and 11 different individuals captured two-mile titles. He also produced 25 Olympians, five of whom were gold medal winners. While Moakley developed outstanding trackmen in all of the various categories, his greatest success was with the distance runners. Perhaps his greatest was John Paul Jones '13, who in 1913 set the world's record in the mile. In 1920, he coached the U.S. Olympic track team to a highly successful showing. He was elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1988.
