A goaltender, Griffin was a two-time All-America selection, earning third-team honors in 1979 and honorable mention in 1978. He was also a two-time All-Ivy first-team selection, earning the honor in 1978 and '79. Griffin was the Co-Ivy Player of the Year, team MVP and tri-captain as a senior. He was the backup goaltender to Hall of Famer Dan Mackesey '77 and took over the starting role in 1978, when Cornell compiled a 13-1 overall record, won the Ivy League title (6-0) and was runner-up to Johns Hopkins for the NCAA championship. Griffin was selected to participate as a member of Team USA, which competed in the World Lacrosse Championships in 1986.
