He stroked Cornell crews to Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) victories in three different categories - freshman, junior varsity, and varsity. He was also a spare on the 1957 varsity crew which went to the Henley Royal Regatta, having rowed in one of the qualifying rounds which enabled the crew to go to the Henley. He stroked the varsity crew which won the IRA title in 1958, the undefeated junior varsity crew in 1957 which won the Eastern Sprints and the IRAs, and the freshman crew which won the IRA crown in 1955. Meakem also stroked the junior varsity boat to the Eastern Sprint championship and to a second-place finish at the IRAs in 1956. He is a former Bloomfield, N.J. native.
