He was an outstanding football and track athlete, serving as captain of the track team in 1973. He had three fine seasons with the lightweight football team as a wide receiver and led the Eastern Lightweight Football League in scoring in 1971. He moved to the varsity in late 1971 and for all of the 1972 season, earning the reputation as a clutch performer who also excelled at kickoff returns. He topped the team in that category in '72, with 272 yards on 11 kickoff returns. In track, he was an All-Ivy pick in 1972 and 1973, winning the 600 at the 1972 indoor Heptagonal championships and finishing second in 1973. He also anchored back-to-back Heps mile relay champions.
