A great miler and two-miler in 1931-32-33, he won the outdoor IC4A one mile championship in 1932. In 1933 he set the American two-mile record at the Cornell-Princeton, Oxford-Cambridge meet. While attending Cornell Law School, he won the Wanamaker Mile of the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden. He captained the track team as a senior. In cross country he finished second at the 1933 IC4A championships.
