He won the University tennis championship twice and captained the team in 1920. He was a finalist in the National Intercollegiate championships in singles play in 1919, losing a close five-set match to Charles Garland of Yale, who that year was Wimbledon World Doubles champion. Still active in tennis, he has been a national tennis finalist over a span of 64 years. In 1983 he won his way to the finals of the National 85-and-over Clay Court Singles championship. During his career he has won 16 national championships. He was a member of the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame and a native of Ohio
