He was a three-time Eastern Intercollegiate doubles champion, with teammate Dick Savitt '50. Steiner was undefeated in both singles and doubles play in Ivy League competition in 1948 and 1949, and was ranked nationally in the United States in men's singles play in '48. Captain of the team in 1950, he helped Cornell to two consecutive Eastern Intercollegiate League titles and a runner-up finish in the league in 1950 amounting to a three-year record of 37-5. Prior to entering Cornell, he paired with Savitt to win the National Indoor Doubles championship in 1946. That same year he won the National Indoor Junior Singles championship. For his performance, he earned the No.2 spot in National Interscholastic rankings and the top rung in the Eastern Junior singles seedings. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School.
