He was a two-time All-Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League first-team second baseman. He led the team in batting as a junior (.354) and senior (.383), and set Cornell career records for games (159), runs (131), its (185), doubles (39), RBI (130) and total bases (293), and tied the career mark for triples (9) and the seasonal record for runs scored (41). An All-Ivy first-team pick in 1981 and 1982, he was co-captain of the team as a senior. McPhail played in the New York Mets organization from 1982 until being traded to the Chicago White Sox n 1987. He is currently playing with Chicago's AAA franchise, the Vancouver Canadians of the Pacific Coast League. He is a native of Norwich, Conn., and a graduate of Norwich Free Academy, where he earned All-Conference honors in basketball, football and baseball and was named Eastern Connecticut Male Athlete of the Year in 1977.
