She served as Cornell’s director of women’s physical education and athletics from 1962 until her retirement in 1986. She initiated and guided some of the most progressive and visible changes in women’s athletics at Cornell. Under her guidance, the women’s physical education and athletic program emerged as one of the fastest growing and foremost of its kind. She developed a quality women’s physical education program with the additional responsibility of coordinating 17 athletic teams, which included scheduling events, budgeting and selecting coaches. She came to Cornell in 1960 to teach physical education and to coach the field hockey and tennis teams. In 1962, her competent work with these teams earned her the position of Cornell’s Newman Director of Women’s Athletics. The directorship was endowed by Floyd R. Newman ’12 to honor his wife. Prior to coming to Cornell, she spent 13 years as director of physical education in the Hazard, Ky., city school system. She is a native of the Boston, Massachusetts area.
