She was named to the All-America second team as a goalie in women's soccer in 1989. She was a three-time All-Ivy selection, earning first-team honors in 1988 and honorable mention in 1987 and 1989. Gambrell set the Cornell record for shutouts in a season with 12 in 1987, when Cornell tied for the Ivy title and went 11-2-2 on the season. She also set the Cornell record for career shutouts (22), posted the longest shutout mark of 939:23 (from 1987-88), and set the season goals against average (0.44 in 1987). As a wing-defenseman on the women's ice hockey team, she was an assistant captain in 1989-90. Gambrell received All-Ivy honorable mention in 1987 and again in 1990, when Cornell won the Ivy title with a 10-0 record. The former Ithaca, N.Y., native graduated from Ithaca High School, where she was a four-sport competitor and captained the soccer team to two STAC championships. She makes her home in East Farmingdale, N.Y.
