He was a three-time All-Ivy first-team selection at fullback. Beuttenmuller played on two Ivy championships squads and two NCAA tournament squads - he was co-captain of the 1977 Ivy championship team, which participated in the NCAA tournament, defeating LIU in the first round before losing to Hartwick in the second round; and the 1975 Ivy champions that made it all the way to the NCAA quarterfinals, defeating Oneonta State and Hartwick before losing to Brown in the quarterfinals. He played in the annual Senior Soccer Bowl game as a member of the East squad, and was selected in the fifth round by the Connecticut Yankees of the American Soccer League.
