A three-year letterman in swimming, he won the 1945 National Intercollegiate 200-yard breaststroke championship with a time of 2:31.2. He earned All-America first team honors in 1945 and 1946 on the basis of his performance at the NCAA championships. He is the only Cornellian ever to have won an NCAA swimming title. He was enrolled in the Navy V-12 program while attending Cornell. He is a native of Bronxville, N.Y. and a graduate of The Peddie School.
