An outstanding diver for the men's swim team for four seasons. Steck won four Eastern titles - three 1-meter championships and one 3-meter crown. At the Eastern championships in 1979, he swept the 1- and 3-meter diving events and became the first diver in 15 years to achieve the double. He was the top Eastern diver in both events at the NCAA championships in 1978, finishing 11th on the 1-meter board to receive All-America recognition and placing 16th on the 3-meter board. He was undefeated on the 1-meter board in dual competition for 3 years and won 10 out of 12 meets at 3 meters his senior year. Steck, who co-captained the team as a senior, finished 11th on the 1-meter board at the AAU Nationals in 1979 for his best finish ever at that level. He is a graduate of Newark (N.J.) Academy, where he participated in four sports, soccer, swimming and diving, baseball and football.
