He was the top-scoring hockey defenseman in the country in 1978, when he tallied 50 points on 24 goals and 26 assists. For his efforts, he was named to the All-America, All-ECAC and All-Ivy first teams. He was a second-team All-Ivy selection as a junior. Shier scored four goals vs. Northeastern in 1978 to set a school record for most goals by a defenseman in a game. He also set career records by a defenseman for most goals (48) and points (106), and tied the seasonal marks for goals (24) and hat tricks (2). Shier possessed a blistering slap shot from the point on Cornell power plays and 14 of his scores came during man-up situations. He is a graduate of Beaconsfield, Que., High School, and earned all-star honors for two years playing with the Pierrefonds Pirates of the Montreal Junior B League.
