He rowed in the No. 6 seat and was commodore of the 1949 Cornell crew that finished third at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships. He was in the No. 4 seat on the ’48 crew that placed fifth at the IRAs while going 3-1 on the season. He was selected to the mythical All-America crew through an unofficial poll conducted by the rowing coaches in 1949.
