    Men's Rowing
He rowed in the number five seat on the 1930 crew that won the IRA Regatta - the last Cornell crew to win an IRA four-mile race. (In 1947 the distance was shortened to three miles.) In 1931 he rowed on the boat that beat Yale and Princeton for the Carnegie Cup, which was the first time since 1922 that Cornell had triumphed over the Eli boat. He was commodore of the 1932 varsity boat that finished a close second behind California in the IRAs California went on to become the 1932 Olympic Championship crew. Two factors that set him apart from his fellow varsity rowers were his age - he was 28 years old when he began his freshman year - and his premature baldness. This combined with his more than the usual amount of publicity to Cornell crew. He played varsity football as a sophomore, but saw limited action. He was race steward at many regattas in later years.
