Orthwein was a member of the men’s polo team that won the national intercollegiate championship tournament in 1966 and finished runner-up for the national intercollegiate title in 1967 and 1968. He was captain of the 1967-68 team and won varsity letters in 1966, 1967 and 1968 and received his numerals as a freshman. Upon graduation, Orthwein played in the U.K., making it to the finals of the Royal Windsor Tournament, Queen’s Cup and Gold Cup Tournaments. He founded the Airstream team, which produced a slew of world-class polo players. Orthwein achieved a five-goal USPA handicap rating, held by less than 5 percent of all polo players.
