    Men's Track & Field, Men's Cross Country
He set the University's Moakley cross country course record in 1978 with a time of 24:48.6, a mark which still stands. A three-time All-East and two-time All-Ivy team pick, he captained the cross country squad in 1978, losing only one race in nine dual meets. The team MVP, he also competed for the NCAA cross country championships in 1976 and 1977. An excellent distanceman for the track team, he won two Heptagonal titles - in the 10,000meter run outdoors in 1977, and in the three-mile run indoors in 1978, setting a Heps record with a tie of 13:53.10. He still holds the Cornell three-mile run record (13:47.8), which he set at the IC4A indoor meet in 1978 while finishing fifth. He competed in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA outdoor championships in 1977 and '78. Currently one of the nation's best marathoners, he defeated race favorite Alberto Salazar to win the 1984 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and earn a berth on the team. He placed 11th in the finals of the marathon at the '84 Games, the highest finish by an American in the race. He is a former native of Pittsford, N.Y.
