He was stroke of the varsity crews of 1952, 1953 and 1954. His tenure at Cornell saw the University return to prominence in the rowing world, with the '52 crew going 6-2 and placing third at the IRA championships; the '53 crew going 7-0 and finishing second at the IRAs; and the '54 shell compiling a 3-1 mark and a second-place IRA finish. He was an excellent stroke despite his small stature. Commodore of the 1954 crew, he was a member of the U.S. Olympic crew in 1956. He was also the freshman crew coach in 1958 at Princeton and named head coach from 1965 until 1981.
