He was named to the All-America first team in 1955 on the basis of his second place finish in foil at the NCAA fencing championships. A co-captain of the team as a junior, he was the recipient of the Illinois Memorial Award as the outstanding fencer of the 1954 NCAA tournament following his fifth place finish in foil competition. He won the individual foil title at the Eastern Intercollegiates in 1954 and helped Cornell tie for the foil team championship. He made his home in Paris, France as an undergraduate.
