He was a six-time Eastern swimming champion, winning the 50 freestyle in 1983 and 1985, the 100 free in 1984, 1985 and 1986, and the 100 butterfly in '84. He set the Eastern meet record in the 50 and 100 free events in 1985, when he also placed second in the 100 fly. He qualified for the NCAA championships in both the 50 and 100 free as a junior, placing 23rd in the finals of both events. He placed sixth in the 50 free at the NCAAs in 1986 to earn All-America honors. He was awarded the Hal Ulen Award at the '86 Eastern championships as the senior who accumulated the most career points at the Easterns. He was All-East in 1984 and named to the EISL All-Star dual meet team in '86. He was team MVP as a senior and tri-captain as a junior and senior. He set the school and pool records in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events. Sprout graduated from Mariner High School in Everett, Wash.
