One of Cornell's all-time great football players and a coach, Starbuck was a fullback and captain in both 1899 and 1900. Caspar Whitney picked him on his first All-America team in 1900. Sports writer Grantland Rice tabbed him as the [quote]best-named man in football.[quote] He was head coach of the Big Red in 1901 and 1902, compiling a two-year record of 19-4, with the '01 team going 11-1. This was the most wins ever by a Cornell football team. He joined the New York Central Railroad soon after terminating his coaching career at Ithaca, and retired in 1949 as a director and executive vice president. He was a native of Fort Ann, N.Y., and had his early school in Glens Falls.
