He was one of Coach Georges Cointe's best students ever. Having no fencing experience before enrolling at Cornell, he progressed so rapidly under Cointe's tutelage that he made the 1956 Olympic team. His fourth place finish in Melbourne was the best Olympic performance ever by an American in the epee event. Prior to the Olympic feat he won the Eastern Intercollegiate epee title in 1954 and 1955. In winning the second title he beat all nine of his opponents and helped Cornell to its first three-weapon championship ever. He was co-captain of the '55 team. Also in 1955 he was epee runner-up at the NCAA championship tournament.
