He was the major reason for the golden era of Cornell tennis from 1947-50, as he posted a career singles record of 57-2, while Cornell went 51-8 and won the Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association team title in 1948 and '49. A four-year starter at No. 1 singles and doubles, he won the Eastern Intercollegiate singles championship in 1949 and 1950 and captured the doubles title in 1948, 1949 and '50. He was an NCAA quarterfinalist in singles in 1947 and 1949. In 1951, Savitt won both the Wimbledon and the Australian championships, becoming only the second American to win both titles in one year. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1976 and the Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame in 1986.
